September 1, 2010 ~ Gel Wax experiments:  I'm making potions and icky stuff for my Wizard Workshop hutch, so I thought I'd play with the Gel Wax and see what it does.  The Pearl Ex Looks great!  The dye (specifically made for Gel Wax) was cool for awhile, suspending the swirls like when you drop food color into water, but they are slowly dissipating into the gel.  But I'm not done yet.  I have a few other ideas.

First I heated the wax until it melted, poured it into the jar and put in the Pearl Ex.  It just sat on top until I stirred it.  But when it gelled, the swirls of the Pearl Ex stayed put and I liked it.  I ended up putting it back into the pan and melting it again and adding a little more Pearl Ex.  However, as it cooled, the Pearl Ex lost it's sparkle, so I had to stir it before it was cooled all the way.  So there are bubbles against the glass and the top is not totally flat.  But I love the color and the sparkle.

For this one, I poured the hot gel wax into the jar, then I dropped a little of the red dye.  It hung there for several minutes and looked very cool.  I should have gotten a picture then..  When I came back after it was all cooled down, the dye had dissipated completely except for one small swirl on the side... which is now fading.

For the Blue, I heated the gel wax to about 225, poured it and waited 10 minutes.  Then added the blue dye, which didn't do anything, so I swirled it once with a wooden skewer.  It was a very nice sharp blue image for awhile, but it is also dissipating slowly.  The icky green color of the wax was because I left a little Pearl Ex in the pan after the Green experiment.  I thought it would be so slight as to be unnoticeable.

The good thing about the Gel Wax, though, is I can put it back and do something else.  Especially since these won't really be candles, and are supposed to be icky looking things a Witch or Wizard might use in a potion!

In April of 2010 I was able to take a two day class with Christi Friesen and the ladies from the San Antonio Polymer Clay Guild ... I learned and laughed alot.  This is what I made on those two days.
